31st October 2009

The first iteration of the bfo:THING frame weighs in at 38.916 kilograms. This compares with the weight of the original Suzuki B King donor of approximately 15 kilograms. However, this first iteration (which is now available on the product:VIEWER page) is a completely solid model i.e. no hollow areas, no webbing, no weight removal. Just solid aluminium. This figure will reduce drastically over the coming weeks.

30th October 2009

There has been a period of time spent on generating the basic design for the frame. This is now essentially completed, and the swinging arm is expected to also be completed shortly. Doubtless the design of both the frame and swinging arm will change (but these will likely be detail changes), but this is the nature of the design process.

This basic geometry should be uploaded to the product:VIEWER page in the next day or two.

This has taken longer than anticipated as there had originally been a desire to design the frame in an aesthetically different fashion. However, the need to keep the frame compact around the donor engine eventually drove the design.

12th October 2009

The basic geometry for the chassis has now been created, and correctly aligned within the design system. This means that frame design proper can now begin.

This basic geometry will shortly replace the switch:BLADE data on the product:VIEWER page.

4th October 2009

This is the first proper entry in the diary. The entries below have been put together in one session, but are an accurate reflection of how the project has evolved.

Shortly, there will be another page containing all the older diary data.

30th September 2009

The first article on the development of the bike has now been submitted for publication in Streetfighters magazine, which will be available on the 5th November 2009.

29th September 2009

All digital data for the original donor frame and swinging arm has now been entered into the design system, which will allow the start of the new design. This will allow the development of basic line geometry.

22nd September 2009

Digital data for the frame has now been received, which will allow the creation of a three dimensional model of the donor bike design, and eventually, a unique design.

11th September 2009

Digital data for the swinging arm has now been received, which will allow the creation of a three dimensional model of the donor bike design, and eventually, a unique design. This is a combination of both points in space relating to the major features on the swinging arm, together with scan data of the actual surfaces of the part.

7th September 2009

The now stripped down frame and swinging arm have been delivered to AC Inspection in Coventry to produce a complete digital map of the original donor bike data. It is essential to know where things are in three dimensional space in order to be able to design quality products.

19th August 2009

The stripdown of the donor bike has now begun. Essentially, the frame and the swinging arm need to be removed so that they can be digitised, which will the design of new versions. In addition, every part (or group of parts) will be weighed, and everything will be photographed. It is also important at this stage to try and understand the quickest and easiest manner in which to strip down the donor bike.

30th May 2009

A brand new donor motorcycle is purchased from Drayton Croft Suzuki in Hinckley.
